My childhood came in cages
different bars for different times
I remember it in peices
those scars it left on my body, heart, and mind.
Like any wound one has
if you pick it, it will bleed
I do my best to stitch it up
pretty smiles on the outside
on the inside, I still scream
You can slap a bandaid on it
pretend that its not there
but wounds don’t go away
just because we act like we don’t care.
Cover ups and lies, you see,
are just another kind of cage
we think we’re healing, but we’re just dealing
with a pain we are too scared to face.
I kept building cages,
after all, it was all I knew,
until the day I finally learned
the only way out was through.
I faced my fears and owned my pain
broke free from every cage
now my life is one that’s free
all that holds me now is grace.
